Who we are
The AdJust Research Collective was co-founded by health researchers Dr. Allie Slemon and Dr. Ingrid Handlovsky, faculty members in the School of Nursing at the University of Victoria. Drs. Slemon and Handlovsky founded the Collective after identifying considerable intersections in their programs of research which each focus on enhancing justice among equity-owed communities, health care provider practices, and health systems. Their approach to research is grounded in community and involve both health care professionals and people with lived and living experience. Their research has investigated topics such as health and well-being of 2S/LGBTQIA+ communities, social justice in nursing, and health system interventions to enhance capacity for equitable care.
Foundationally, the AdJust Research Collective is situated in community-engaged research, and prioritizes the active and meaningfully engagement of people with lived experience, and representatives of community organizations. This commitment stems from our recognition that it is essential to ground inquiry and health systems change in the voices and experiences of people who are most impacted by structural inequities. To support engagement, our Collective maintains multiple Advisory groups comprised of people with lived experience, who support all aspects of research and knowledge mobilization processes across projects.
The AdJust Research Collective supports a robust team of researchers and research trainees. Undergraduate, Master’s, and PhD students are involved in a range of projects at across the Collective’s repertoire, gaining experience in not only community-based research, health systems research, and more, but also receiving mentorship from Drs. Handlovsky and Slemon and other established researchers who collaborate on these projects. Graduate-level trainees often gain leadership experience in Project Coordinator roles that position them to become successful independent researchers in their own career trajectories.
